Northern polls on Sep 7: SLMC to contest independently
Elections for the Northern, North Western and Central Provincial Councils will be held on September 7, Local English newspaper reports.
The North Western and Central Provincial Councils will be dissolved by June 20 after which the dates for the elections will be announced.
The Northern Provincial Council is also to be formed in time for elections to be held on September 7. Additional Elections Commissioner R. M. A. L. Ratnayake said that the date for the elections are usually announced after the Provincial Councils are dissolved.
Moves are underway to dissolve both the North Western and Central Provincial Councils on the same day.
He also said that the Chief Ministers of both provinces have been called for a meeting with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees tomorrow (Monday) to discuss the polls.
The government had already announced on an earlier occasion that the elections for the Northern Province will be held in September. Ahead of the Elections the government has set in motion moves to repeal the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Election conversing of above provinces would be carried out by Ministers Nimal Siripala Desilva and Maithripala Sirisena. SLMC decided to contest independently in the Northern Polls.
SriLanka Muslim Congress decided to contest independently in the upcoming northern provincial council election.
Party leaders from the eastern province stressed to contest independently in the polls. according to this decision SLMC would contest under symbol of tree.
Leaders stressed the party heads to prove power and identity of the party in the upcoming election.
