Sri Lanka made false statement on India's comments

India has been told by President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the 13th Amendment to the constitution needs some changes..

President Mahinda Rajapaksa told visiting Indian National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon today that most of the points in the 13th Amendment will be implemented. However he noted that there were issues in the clause dealing with land and police powers to the provinces and that needs to be addressed by the Parliament Select Committee. The President had said that the best place to iron out differences on the 13th Amendment is the Parliament Select Committee and he urged Menon to convince the TNA to join the Committee. Menon had also met UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and SLMC leader Rauf Hakeem separately and discussed issues arising over the 13th Amendment. Last evening the visiting Indian official had talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) over the same issue. He had told the TNA that India is against the 13th Amendment being unilaterally amended. Meanwhile the Indian High Commission in Colombo said that Menon conveyed to the Sri Lankan leadership the Government of India’s views on the recent political developments and called for early political settlement and national reconciliation through the meaningful devolution of power so to ensure that all citizens of Sri Lanka, including the Sri Lankan Tamil community, would lead a life marked by equality, justice, dignity and self-respect.
