UK stress on reconcilia​tion prior to Commonweal​th meeting

Britain has called for concrete progress in Sri Lanka on reconciliation and media freedom ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in November.

UK Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alistair Burt said he raised this issue at a meeting with the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to UK Dr. Chris Nonis today. He said that he also discussed the case into the murder of British national Khuram Shaikh who was killed in Tangalle in 2011. Burt said that it was crucial the accused face a fair trial without political interference.
