Opposition protest against Weliweriya incident at Fort

A demonstration organised by several opposition political parties, was held opposite the Fort Railway Station on Wednesday.

The intention of this demonstration was to protest against the suppression of public protests, and the events that unfolded in Weliweriya recently.

The demonstration commenced near the Fort Railway Station.

One lane of the road from Colombo Fort to Galle Road, was closed off in order to control traffic congestion caused by the demonstration.

A Court order has been issued preventing the opposition from organizing a protest march at the Fort Railway station against the Weliveriya incident. The order has confined the protest only to the Fort Railway station area without disturbing the public.

However protesters marched up to Hilton junction and police forced to stop them.

UNP Parliamentarians Ravi Karunanayake and Tissa Attanayake hand over petition towards president Rajapaksa on demanding to grant compensation for Weliweriya victims.
