Train strike

Train travels are heavily interrupted due to a 48 hour token strike launched by some railway trade unions.

Trade unions demand that their salary scales should be altered if the strike should be terminated. The Railway Department said that all the night main trains were cancelled. Meanwhile, a senior railway official said that no train had left from Colombo Fort and Maradana this morning. It is reported that large crowds have lined up in many major bus stands. Several night mail trains have been cancelled due to a 48 hour railway strike from midnight today by railway trade union. Railways Professional Trade Union Alliance decided to launch a 48 hour strike from midnight today (07), based on several demands including a wage hike.
