Suspect hangs himself in police cell

A suspect has committed suicide by hanging himself inside a cell at the Baddegama Police Station in Galle.

The man had used the sarong he had been wearing to hang himself and was pronounced dead upon admittance to the Baddegama Hospital, police said. The deceased, a resident of Boralukada in Baddegama, was arrested and detained in the police cell over 3 separate complaints filed against him. It is also said that there is a pending murder case against him at the Galle Magistrate’s Court. The suicide victim’s body was handed over to relatives this morning following the completion of the postmortem examination.
